Community radio
In Chile if you ask something what is his favorite
radio, probably he ask you “Cooperativa”, “AND” or “Biobío” for the
journalistic work and “Rock and Pop” or “40 principales” for the music, maybe
other depending on the interest of the listener, but in most cases, perhaps in
all cases, the replies will be stations of the FM dial or, in very few persons,
of the AM dial. This media are important companies that make a fantastic work,
in fact personally I like them a lot, but there is something that worries me a
lot: almost of this radio stations are controlled by gigantic empires of
communication or by businessmen that have interests with politic parties.
All of my life I thought that the entire radio world
is contaminated by the business and the partisan politics but when I began to
study journalism I discovered the community radios. This is a type of mass
media that have interest in development the needs and discussions of the
communities, giving very little time to the issues of the powerful people. The
most common topics that are spoken in the community media are the environment,
the social movements, the indigenous peoples and gender issues. Apparently the
powerful don’t like to remember that this think exist.
In our country this medias have very disadvantages to
grow up because the laws are very insufficient and don’s recognize the
important role that they have for the democracy and to make discussions with
different point of view in the public opinion.

I think the community radios are part of the hope for a transparent communication and even a more democratic society. As you said, the world of the radio in Chile right now it’s fully controlled by huge holdings like enterprises with dirty interests :( and the fact that community radios are being more listened really means hope for the communication and journalistic work too.
